The oldest jewish cemetery in Europe, in Worms, Germany


This cemetery was certainly built ar the same time as the first synagogue, in 1034.

The oldest tombstone, Jakob ha Bachur , still legible dates form 1076.

Here are about 2 000 graves.Heiliger Sand was closed in 1911. The last burial was in 1930.

 

Close to the entrance, the most important tombstones are  Meïer de Rottenburg (died in 1293) and Alexander ben Salomon Wimpfen (died in 1307). Other famous graves are in the place called the « Valley of the rabbis » (Rabbinental).
